This academic paper is a report prepared in the context of the Supervised Teaching Practice (SEP) of the Master's in Teaching of Economics and Accounting, through which we intend to analyse the pedagogical activities carried out, which took into account multiculturalism to enrich the teaching-learning process of a class of 11th grade of Economics A, using the Vygotskian theory for teaching-learning practices as a pedagogical model. The supervised teaching practice (PES) in the subject of Economics A focused on didactic units 10 and 11 carried out between November and May of the 2021-2022 school year. Data collection was carried out by direct participant observation (anthropology's own method, but widely used in educational sciences) through the field diary, a grid for observation of students' behaviour and attitudes in class space and complemented by a survey conducted by the students and the cooperating teacher to evaluate the methodologies used. According to the results obtained from the participant observation of the pedagogic practices, using a multicultural approach based on the historical-cultural psychology of Vygotsky, we can conclude that, this model seems to be effective in the pedagogic practice in what students’ cultural and psycho social integration in class during the teaching-learning process is concerned

From Popular to Contemporary: a Review on Portuguese Vernacular Architecture

    Get PDF
This research is based on the main principle that history repeats itself. Therefore, it can create interest in subjects that, at first sight, may look anachronistic. The authors recall the growing position towards architectural solutions, that take reference from the past, and retrace the studies perceived by the architects of the “Inquérito à Arquitectura Regional Portuguesa” (Survey on Regional Portuguese Architecture) of 1955/57. Since they were looking for a middle way between government impositions and the radicalism of the International Style, the results influenced not only their individual designs but also acquired a pioneer status, thus raising many new questions.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Environmental remediation promoted by silver nanoparticles biosynthesized by eucalyptus leaves extract

A simple and low-cost green synthesis method was optimized to prepare stable silver nanoparticles (AgNP) using aqueous Eucalyptus globulus leaves extract. This green method allows to obtain AgNP with spherical morphology and variable size around 25 nm, and it is dependent of the reaction temperature and concentration of the plant extract. AgNP stability was followed during 3 months by zeta potential measurements and a negative zeta range from 30.7 to 33.6 was determined. Biogenic-stabilized AgNP exhibited dual-functional properties as effective in environmental remediation with bacterial growth inhibition and dye photodegradation. Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were tested for antibacterial activity, and considerable inhibitory activity was found. High photocatalytic degradation of indigo carmine (IC) dye was performed in the presence of the AgNP as catalysts under sunlight irradiation. The degradation efficiency after 2 h of reaction was 37 %, 83 % and 98 % in the presence of UV light, visible light and sunlight irradiation, respectively. The germination of corn kernels test was used to determine the toxicity of the treated IC solutions and the results showed low toxicity after the photodegradation process.V.R. thanks to Fundação para Ciência e Tecnologia, FCT (Portugal) for her Ph.D. grant (SFRH/BD/141073/2018). Translation and validation of Convergence Insufficiency Symptom Survey (CISS) to Portuguese - psychometric results

Purpose: Translate and adapt the Convergence Insuficiency Symptom Survey (CISS) questionnaire to the Portuguese language and culture and assess the psychometric properties of the translated questionnaire (CISSvp). Methods: The CISS questionnaire was adapted according to the methodology recommended by some authors. The process involved two translations and back-translations performed by independent evaluators, evaluation of these versions, preparation of a synthesis version and its pre-test. The final version (CISSvp) was applied in 70 patients (21.79 ± 2.42 years) students in higher education, and at two different times, by two observers, to assess its reliability. Results: The results showed good internal consistency of the CISSvp (Cronbach's alpha - α=0.893). The test re-test revealed an average of the differences between the first and second evaluation of 0.75 points (SD ± 3.53), which indicates a minimum bias between the two administrations. The interrater reliability assessed by intraclass correlation coefficient ranged from 0.880 to 0.952, revealing that the CISSvp represents an appropriate tool for measuring the visual discomfort associated with near vision tasks with a high level of reproducibility. Conclusions: The CISS Portuguese version, showed good psychometric properties and has been sown to be applicable to the Portuguese population, to quantify the visual discomfort associated with near vision, in higher education students

Tracking the Origin of a Rabbit Haemorrhagic Virus 2 Outbreak in a Wild Rabbit Breeding Centre in Portugal; Epidemiological and Genetic Investigation

As key prey, the wild rabbit downsize constitutes a major drawback on the endangered Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) re-introduction in the Iberia. Several captive breeding units mostly located in Alentejo, endeavour the wild rabbit repopulation of depleted areas assigned for the lynx re-introduction. Here we report an RHDV2 outbreak that occurred in early 2016 in a wild rabbit captive breeding unit located in Barrancos municipality. The estimated mortality rate between March and April 2016 was approximately 8.67%. Anatomopathologic examination was carried out for 13 victimized rabbits. Molecular characterization was based on the complete vp60 capsid gene. The 13 rabbit carcasses investigated showed typical macroscopic RHD lesions testing positive to RHDV2- RNA. Comparison of the vp60 nucleotide sequences obtained from two specimens with others publically available disclosed similarities below 98.22% with RHDV2 strains originated in the Iberia and Azores and revealed that the two identical strains from Barrancos-2016 contain six unique single synonymous nucleotide polymorphisms. In the phylogenetic analysis performed, the Barrancos-2016 strains clustered apart from other known strains, meaning they may represent new evolutionary RHDV2 lineages. No clear epidemiological link could be traced for this outbreak where the mortalities were lower compared with previous years. Yet, network analysis suggested a possible connection between the missing intermediates from which the strains from Barrancos 2013, 2014 and 2016 have derived. It is therefore possible that RHDV2 has circulated endemically in the region since 2012, with periodic epizootic occurrences. Still, six years after its emergence in wild rabbits, RHDV2 continues to pose difficulties to the establishment of natural wild rabbit populations that are crucial for the self-sustainability of the local ecosystems

Search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in association with top quarks and decaying into a bbˉb\bar{b} pair in pppp collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 13  TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in association with a top-quark pair, tt¯H, is presented. The analysis uses 36.1  fb-1 of pp collision data at s=13  TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2015 and 2016. The search targets the H→bb¯ decay mode. The selected events contain either one or two electrons or muons from the top-quark decays, and are then categorized according to the number of jets and how likely these are to contain b-hadrons. Multivariate techniques are used to discriminate between signal and background events, the latter being dominated by tt¯+jets production. For a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV, the ratio of the measured tt¯H signal cross-section to the standard model expectation is found to be μ=0.84-0.61+0.64. A value of μ greater than 2.0 is excluded at 95% confidence level (C.L.) while the expected upper limit is μ<1.2 in the absence of a tt¯H signal.Peer Reviewe

Performance of the ATLAS Track Reconstruction Algorithms in Dense Environments in LHC Run 2

With the increase in energy of the Large Hadron Collider to a centre-of-mass energy of 13  TeV\text {TeV} for Run 2, events with dense environments, such as in the cores of high-energy jets, became a focus for new physics searches as well as measurements of the Standard Model. These environments are characterized by charged-particle separations of the order of the tracking detectors sensor granularity. Basic track quantities are compared between 3.2 fb1^{-1} of data collected by the ATLAS experiment and simulation of proton–proton collisions producing high-transverse-momentum jets at a centre-of-mass energy of 13  TeV\text {TeV} . The impact of charged-particle separations and multiplicities on the track reconstruction performance is discussed. The track reconstruction efficiency in the cores of jets with transverse momenta between 200 and 1600 GeV\text {GeV} is quantified using a novel, data-driven, method. The method uses the energy loss,  dE/dx{\text { d}}{} \textit{E}/d\textit{x} , to identify pixel clusters originating from two charged particles. Of the charged particles creating these clusters, the measured fraction that fail to be reconstructed is 0.061±0.006 (stat.)±0.014 (syst.)0.061 \pm 0.006\ {\text {(stat.)}} \pm 0.014\ {\text {(syst.)}} and 0.093±0.017 (stat.)±0.021 (syst.)0.093 \pm 0.017\ {\text {(stat.)}}\pm 0.021\ {\text {(syst.)}} for jet transverse momenta of 200–400  GeV\text {GeV} and 1400–1600  GeV\text {GeV} , respectively.Peer Reviewe

Measurements of ttˉt\bar{t} differential cross-sections of highly boosted top quarks decaying to all-hadronic final states in pppp collisions at s=13\sqrt{s}=13\, TeV using the ATLAS detector

    Get PDF
Measurements are made of differential cross-sections of highly boosted pair-produced top quarks as a function of top-quark and tt¯ system kinematic observables using proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s=13  TeV. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 36.1  fb-1, recorded in 2015 and 2016 with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Events with two large-radius jets in the final state, one with transverse momentum pT>500  GeV and a second with pT>350  GeV, are used for the measurement. The top-quark candidates are separated from the multijet background using jet substructure information and association with a b-tagged jet. The measured spectra are corrected for detector effects to a particle-level fiducial phase space and a parton-level limited phase space, and are compared to several Monte Carlo simulations by means of calculated χ2 values. The cross-section for tt¯ production in the fiducial phase-space region is 292±7(stat)±71(syst)  fb, to be compared to the theoretical prediction of 384±36  fb.Peer Reviewe
